Summer is well on the way, and we have seen many new developments throughout the country. The early heat caught many utilities unprepared for record or near record loads. Many utilities in the midwest saw their peaks reach levels anticipated for a year or two down the road. Summer load patterns have been getting harder and harder to predict as growth in most areas spirals higher and higher.
The changing of the guard. Area Officers will change this fall and National offices in the spring more later in the news letter.
Highlights from the last National meeting:
At the last National meeting Dave Acton-Alliant was nominated and approved to receive the National Service Award. Congratulations Dave!!
Janet Smith-National Treasurer reports current bank balances of:
General Fund: $16,643
Promotional Fund: $ 9,003
Nick Nickolson Fund: $54,620
The Southeast Area will be passing the baton onto the Southwest Area at the National spring meet in Las Vegas.
The Southeast deserves a nice hand for a job well done. James Ford and the crew have done a good job keeping the membership in focus during all the changes taking place.
Words of Wisdom from the National President:
The phenomenal growth of APDA is a tribute to the high ideals of the Association. Today the association is facing many challenges to these high ideals. The increased workload, tagging, stressed transmission systems, new players in the market place, deregulation and our latest challenge, Dispatcher Certification have stressed even the most professional dispatcher. We find ourselves quietly remembering our motto
"A SUPERIOR DISPATCHER IS DEFINED AS ONE WHO USES HIS/HER EXCELLENT JUDGEMENT TO KEEP OUT OF SITUATIONS REQUIRING THE USE OF HIS/HER SUPERIOR SKILLS!!"
Highlights from the last Area Meeting:
Area Elections are complete and Sharon Cox is the new President of the UMW. Bruce Glorvigen moves to Trustee, Phil Jennings to V-President, Darrell Cockerill-Secretary and Jane Cocker-Treasurer.
Everyone enjoyed the "Flight north", and all the other activities that were planned by the members at Mannitoba. Some of us enjoyed it so much that it took several days to recover.
Elmer Engman-MinnPower is the outgoing Trustee for the UMW. Elmer has spent the last 6 years as an Officer in the UMW and has served with distinction. Well continue to need his advise on National/Area business in the future. We should all give Elmer a thanks for a job well done. ( Ya done good )
Area Secretary Darrell Cockerill reports that he has received several new applications for membership. The new membership[ Application can be found in the back of the latest Log, or contact Darrell and he will be glad to help you out.
From the Area Treasurer: Several members are late paying their 98 dues. Please get those in as soon as possible.
Current Upper Midwest membership: 399 regular members, and 115 life members to bring our total membership to 514. Please make sure you keep the area Secretary informed if you change your mailing address. Area Secretary Darrell Cockerill provides all other officers and us with our mailing list, and its only as current as you make it. Treasury Balance as of Dec. 1997: $3,246.00

PRESIDENTS CORNER
Dear Fellow APDA Members,
I am very happy to be writing my first letter from the Presidents Corner. At the last meeting we held elections of officers and you will find a list of us elsewhere in this newletter... complete with e-mail addresses and phone numbers.
August is here and that means we have a meeting coming up around the corner. I would like to thank Aquila Power for stepping up and hosting this meeting on short notice. Our National Vice President, Terry Herring ( Carolina Power & Light), will be attending our meeting, so please introduce yourself and show him our wonderful UMW hospitality. It also looks like we will have another excellent grand prize for the scholarship raffle. Steve Peluso and his group from NSP Energy Marketing are arranging to donate a Mountain Bike along with shipping if needed by the lucky winner. Our scholarship fund is doing better than we had anticipated thanks to all the donations and purchase of raffle tickets.
We are looking for Host companys for future meetings. The next available opening is for the Fall 2000. Be sure to check elsewhere in the newsletter for a list of upcoming meetings, locations and dates.
Dont forget to check out the APDA web site. The national home page is found under www.apda.org. You may link to any area page from the National Home Page. Smitty ( Richard Smith-OPPD) is our webmaster and has put in many hours creating and updating our area site. It contains a lot of information on past and upcoming meeting. My kudos to you Smitty. Thanks
See you in Kansas City.
